biography

Michelle DeLoach Brooks graduated with a  Bachelor in Finance from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.  Following her undergraduate degree in 2001, she attended Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Louisiana State University, where she graduated with a dual degree, Juris Doctorate and Bachelor in Civil Law.

She has practiced in the Thibodaux office since August of 2014.  She is a native of Lafayette, Louisiana and moved to Thibodaux in 2007, after marrying her husband and fellow Thibodaux attorney, Beau Brooks.  She and her husband have two daughters, Ramey and Mary-Kate, and a son, Spencer.

While practicing in Lafayette, she was a member of the elite Acadian Inns of Court in 2006-2007.  She has fourteen years of trial experience in most jurisdictions across the State of Louisiana.  She has represented several large insurance companies in her career.  She has a general civil litigation practice with an emphasis in insurance defense, coverage disputes, first party extra contractual claims, premises liability and bad faith.  Ms. Brooks has successfully represented clients in matters that have proceeded to trial in Louisiana state, appellate and federal courts.  She also has been able to secure the successful resolution of matters prior to trial in mediation.  She has attended two rigorous trial advocacy courses hosted by the National Institute of Trial Attorneys at Loyola University in New Orleans and at Allstate Insurance Company’s headquarters in Chicago.

She is a member of the elite Louisiana Bar Foundation where she serves on the Grants Committee and the Bayou Community Partnership Panel. She is also a member of various professional associations, including Lafourche Parish Bar Association, Terrebonne Parish Bar Association, Louisiana Defense Counsel Association, Louisiana State Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association.

She is involved with the Supreme Court’s Lawyers and Judges in the Classroom, where she speaks to young students throughout Southeast Louisiana about the law and legal profession.

Ms. Brooks is very involved in her community. She is a sustainer of Thibodaux Service League, where she was an active member for many years, serving as Treasurer, Parliamentarian and the Committee Chair for the By-Laws and Standing Rules committee. She is a Charter member of the Bayou Country Children’s Museum. She is a member of St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux, where her daughters attend school. Ms. Brooks assisted with the implementation of a new program at St. Joseph Elementary School called the GRACE program, which allows students with intellectual disabilities obtain a Catholic education. She and her husband hope that their son, Spencer, will be able to attend this school when he goes to Kindergarten.

Ms. Brooks’ proudest accomplishment in her life is the birth of her son, Spencer, who has Down syndrome. After his birth in 2015, she and her husband made a commitment to raise awareness and provide support to those families who have a child born with Down syndrome. She is co-founder and Treasurer of Upside Downs, Inc.

Upside Downs, Inc. is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization committed to helping the Down syndrome community through new parent support, recreational activities, raising awareness and advocating for a brighter future. Upside Downs is a local affiliate of the National Down Syndrome Society and the National Down Syndrome Congress. The goal of Upside Downs is to promote the “Upside” and positive aspects of Down syndrome and further our belief that Anything is possible with Down syndrome.
